Wavy hair: not curly, not straight. So what?
Precious tips for embracing the new era of wavy hair.
The Straight Hair Society: A Myth to Debunk
Until a few years ago, beautiful hair was associated with smooth, shiny, and flawless locks. Products on the market followed these aesthetic canons and were designed to hide every natural crease, frizz, or movement, offering an artificial shine. But this ideal led many people with wavy or curly hair to repress their true nature, by straightening them or using products that weighed their hair down.
Have you ever gone to the hairdresser and been told that your hair, which you always thought was straight, is actually wavy or even curly? And maybe you didn't believe it. But it could be true: your natural hair could reveal waves or curls that you never discovered because they are always hidden by a routine that doesn't enhance them.
Rediscovering Wavy Hair: The Pandemic Effect
During the pandemic, many have abandoned straighteners and aggressive treatments, dedicating themselves to greater self-care. It was a time when many people let their hair dry naturally and, to their surprise, discovered a texture never seen before: light waves, sinuous movements or even hidden curls.
This change has paved the way for new routines, with the aim of bringing out the true nature of hair.
Were you also one of those people who discovered a new self?
Unsatisfactory results? Defined hair the first day, but flat and frizzy the next morning.
For many, however, the results of this new haircare routine are not satisfactory: defined waves and curls on the day of washing soon transform into flat, frizzy and shapeless hair.
Don't worry, many of us have been there! Don't give up, there are many small practices that with dedication and patience will lead you to have wavy and curly hair as you would like, natural and without frizz:
1. Embrace your wavy hair, without forcing it
The first rule to enhance your wavy hair is to accept it for what it is . Don't try to get defined curls if your hair is naturally wavy. So abandon this fantasy! Instead, aim to enhance the S-shaped soul of your hair, embracing the beauty of your waves.
2. Don't fall into the straight hair trap again
Have you achieved unsatisfactory results? Don't go back to the straightener and straightening, you've come this far and it's already a great step. Be patient. If you've been straightening your hair for a long time, maybe that's why your hair is frizzier and "neither fish nor fowl", as many wavy people complain. But to bring out the true essence of your hair, you need to take care of it and not damage it with further straightening or smoothing treatments.
3. Use summer to bring out your natural texture
I know you still remember that time you came out of the sea, your hair dried salty in the wind and the heat of the sun. And there you have it, all those beautiful waves came out! Write down these images in your mind to remind yourself of the hidden potential of your hair. So take advantage of summer, the easiest time of year to bring out the wavy nature of your hair, to let your hair dry in the wind, naturally, and say goodbye to straightening routines and straighteners for the whole season.
4. Leonia styling cream: your ally for defined waves
To enhance the waves, the Leonia styling cream (coming soon!) is perfect: a modeling product designed for curly and wavy hair, made in Italy with a 100% natural formulation. This cream is suitable for wavy hair because it does not stiffen or weigh it down. It is in fact important to remember that your wavy hair needs styling creams that do not overload the hair, with the final result of flattening it.
How to apply it:
- After washing, pat your hair dry with a microfiber towel.
- Apply the right amount of styling cream, modulating the dose based on the texture of your hair. If the hair tends to be more S-shaped, apply a smaller amount (a nut of product), if the product tends to be more curly, the amount can be increased (even 2 nut of product).
- Scrunch (gently press hair upwards) to accentuate natural waves.
The goal is not to create curls where there aren't any, but to emphasize your natural waves, making them soft and defined.
5. Don't forget the diffuser
Welcome into your home that much underrated and ignored instrument, the diffuser . Maybe you have never used it, maybe it is at home in some corner of the closet, or maybe you have thrown it away. Well in that case it is time to exhume the diffuser.
After styling, dry your hair with the diffuser, often changing the inclination of your head : upside down, tilted right, left, bringing your head back. Avoid any rubbing to avoid frizzing your hair. For example, immediately after drying, avoid wearing a helmet or lying down (if you do, do not put your hair behind your back), wear high-necked sweaters being careful. It seems complicated, but it's all a question of small precautions and habit: it's worth it!
6. Small attentions, big results
Wavy hair requires more care than straight hair. Here are some tips to keep it healthy and enhanced:
- Minimize coloring and schedule regenerating breaks for your hair
- Avoid washing your hair too frequently: try not to wash your hair more than twice a week.
- Choose quality products, without silicones or polishing agents, that respect the natural texture of your hair
